Chapter 1502 A New Record in Film History (Part 1)
Inside the theater, the soft sobs of female audience members could still be heard.
For professional film critic Jung Woo-sung, the opening of this film was incredibly impactful.
From the moment that slimy, ferocious, and enormous monster appeared without warning, charged into the crowd, and slaughtered them, swallowing humans whole with its jaws full of sharp teeth... Zheng Yucheng felt a chill run down his spine throughout this entire scene.
—So true.
At that moment, he remembered what director Bong Joon-hyun had said before the film's release.
"This is a world-class special effects team."
In the 4K ultra-high-definition visuals on the screen, every inch of the monster's skin texture and every muscle twitch was breathtakingly realistic. As a film and television professional, he knew that the level of special effects was incredibly powerful.
What's even more commendable is that the horror and oppression of the monsters in the film are not achieved through the "jump scare" technique commonly used in Hollywood monster movies. Instead, it is achieved through cinematic language and the incredibly realistic physical presence of the monsters, pressing a real threat that is close at hand, that you can smell the stench, into the hearts of every viewer.
In the film, the plot continues.
The male protagonist, Kang-doo, and his father are forced to move to a government-established shelter. His archery athlete sister, Nam-joo, and his hot-tempered, angry younger brother, Nam-il, who has just graduated from university, also return.
The family was heartbroken in front of Xianshu's portrait when a group of people in protective suits burst in, tackled Qiangdou like madmen, and took him away for quarantine.
It turns out that, as confirmed by the U.S. military, all soldiers who had come into contact with the monster had their skin infected with an unknown virus.
In the isolation room, Qiangdou's phone suddenly rang.
On the phone, came the voice of Hyun-seo, whom they thought was dead.
It turns out that Xianshu is still alive. The monster took her to a sewer, which is where it "stores" humans.
Hyun-seo found a cell phone in the sewer and made the call.
Upon learning that their daughter was still alive, Qiangdou's family immediately sought help from the police in the quarantine room, but no matter how they tried to communicate, they were only met with indifference.
Left with no other choice, the family decided to take action to rescue Xianshu.
In order to escape the quarantine room, obtain a gun to fight the monster, and access a disinfection vehicle that would allow him to enter the vicinity of the Han River, Old Park spent all his savings.
Off-screen, Zheng Yucheng in the audience had a furrowed brow.
What might seem like a transitional plot to others was taken very seriously by him.
The chaotic and disorganized quarantine rooms, the government's lack of contingency plans for dealing with emergencies, the brutal handling of the situation, and the police's laziness and inaction due to aversion to trouble... all these plot points are incredibly realistic.
Even when Qiang Dou's family was desperate, they had no choice but to seek help from the local gang.
This scene is undeniably ironic.
In the story, after escaping from the hospital, the group is wanted by the police. They drive back to the Han River in a vehicle provided by the triads.
During the security checkpoint inspection, I was stopped by an official at the last checkpoint.
But the officials stopped the vehicle not to stop them from moving forward. Old Park understood, but all his savings had already been taken by the underworld. Now he had no choice but to ask Qiang Dou to hand over his savings.
After silently accepting the bribe, the official smiled knowingly and waved his hand to let the car pass.
But when he opened the bulging black bag and lifted the lid of the instant noodle box, it was full of coins...
This scene made the still-shaken audience burst into laughter.
