Chapter 1500: The Two Who Insult Each Other
Chapter 1500: The Two Who Insult Each Other
Chen Jun slowly shook his head, his gaze sharp and clear: "I only believe in observable and verifiable facts and logic. So-called gods are nothing more than human beings' worship of unknown forces, fear of them, or projections of some kind of spiritual sustenance. In the face of science and reason, there is no place for gods."
The old man seemed unsurprised by Chen Jun's answer; instead, he wore an expression of "I knew it." He nodded, then threw out a more specific, yet even more astonishing, concept:
“General Chen, it’s normal and right that you don’t believe in God. But what I want to say is that there may not be an omniscient and omnipotent ‘God’ in the traditional religious sense, but there may exist… extraterrestrial intelligent life, or advanced extraterrestrial civilization, that possesses power similar to that of gods and far surpasses our current level of technology.”
"Aliens?" Chen Jun's brows furrowed even more. The topic had jumped from an evil organization to "gods," and then to "aliens"—the leap was so great that if it weren't for the old man's special identity, he would almost have suspected that the other party was deliberately trying to confuse the issue.
“Yes, aliens.” Old Man Hua’s tone was certain, a hint of worry flashing in his eyes. “Based on what I’ve learned from my years of exploring the Abyss, the core ideology and ultimate goal of this organization is not simply to dominate the underworld or to acquire wealth and power. They firmly believe that somewhere in the universe, there exist advanced life forms far surpassing human civilization. They believe that these ‘extraterrestrial gods’ will eventually descend upon Earth, and that existing nations, civilizations, and orders will be completely wiped out or destroyed in this ‘descent’.”
"So, the 'Abyss' was initially established to study and 'welcome' these so-called extraterrestrial life forms?" Chen Jun followed up his line of thought, "What evidence did they possess? Or rather, did they actually make contact?"
Old Man Hua shook his head decisively, his expression a mixture of sarcasm and seriousness: "No. At least in all the years I've been undercover, and based on what I've learned through various channels, the core of the 'Abyss' has never truly and directly come into contact with any entity or creation that can be confirmed as an extraterrestrial civilization."
He paused, then emphasized, “But General Chen, you must understand that sometimes, ‘firm belief’ itself is a terrifying force, especially when it is combined with enormous ambition, resources, and distorted technology. Inside the ‘Abyss,’ there exists a highly fanatical ‘Adventists.’ Although they have no concrete evidence, they constantly ‘prove’ their beliefs by collecting various UFO reports, ancient legends, unusual archaeological discoveries, and even… possibly capturing or studying some special samples or energy phenomena with non-Earth characteristics that we have not yet made public.”
"The genetic modification and biochemical experiments they're conducting now are, to some extent, also for the purpose of having 'new human' bodies that are 'worthy' of communicating with 'gods' or even 'serving' 'gods' when 'gods descend,' or... for surviving the prophesied 'Great Purge.' If they really master the mature technology, and that day really comes..." Old Man Hua didn't finish his sentence, but his meaning was self-evident.
Just then, Lao Wen, who had just finished the call, strode back with a livid face, muttering curses under his breath: "Boss! I've checked! Director Jiang said...it's absolutely impossible!"
He angrily pointed at Old Man Hua: "Director Jiang said it himself, the former Director Hua passed away from illness five years ago! He personally presided over the memorial service, and personally watched the cremation and burial! His ashes are still in Babaoshan! This old man... is definitely bragging! He's talking nonsense! I don't know where he found out the old director's name and came to impersonate him!"
Old Wen's words were like a bucket of cold water poured over the atmosphere that had just become somewhat heavy due to the topic of "aliens".
Upon hearing this, Old Man Hua did not panic or argue. Instead, he glared at Old Wen with a look of utter disappointment and scolded him: "You brat! After all these years, you're still the same impetuous, reckless, and incompetent fool who jumps to conclusions without investigating properly! That kid Jiang Ling personally presided over the funeral? He watched the cremation with his own eyes? Humph! Before the truth is fully revealed, can't you just shut your mouth and pretend to be mute?! You have to jump out and cause trouble!"
"Oh my god!" Old Wen was stunned by the scolding, then flew into a rage. "You old geezer! You dare to curse me?! Pretending to be a martyr, and you still dare to be so arrogant?! I'll teach you a lesson..."
The two of them actually started hurling insults at each other right in front of Chen Jun and his team! One called the other a "scammer," a "fake," and a "charlatan," while the other called him a "little scammer," "brainless," and "all brawn and no brain"... The intensity of their words and the excitement of their emotions made it seem less like a conversation between a "representative" of a mysterious organization and a deputy director of the Strategic Bureau and more like two long-time rivals arguing in the street.
Chen Jun did not immediately stop the sudden "quarrel". He crossed his arms, his fingers unconsciously rubbing his chin, his eyes scanning back and forth between the furious old man and the angry but still somewhat "elder scolding junior" old man Hua.
He was thinking quickly.
While Hua's claims about the "abyss" and "aliens" are bizarre, they logically seem to explain some of the organization's madness and fit their underlying motivation for conducting inhuman experiments like "gene warriors." Moreover, the old man's demeanor, tone, and the composure he displayed despite being in danger, even daring to argue with the hot-tempered Lao Wen... don't seem like the kind of act a typical conman or fanatic could convincingly portray.
But Director Jiang Ling's testimony was unequivocal. The death, cremation, and burial of the former director of the National Security Bureau should have been confirmed through rigorous procedures, making it unlikely to be wrong. Unless... there are hidden details that even Jiang Ling is unaware of? Or, is this old man Hua in front of us truly an extremely skilled impersonator?
Old Wen cursed for a while, only to find that he was not only outmatched in terms of momentum, but also seemed to be slightly inferior in terms of vocabulary and reaction speed, which made him even more frustrated. He turned to Chen Jun, panting heavily, and said angrily, "Boss! You handle this old man! I... I don't care anymore! Damn it, a charlatan who talks nonsense and pretends to be a former bureau chief who died for the country, it's simply... simply outrageous!"
Upon hearing this, Old Man Hua coldly added, "Old Pit, incorrigible. A complete brute, damn it..."
"You fucking..." Old Wen completely lost it, rolled up his sleeves, and was about to rush forward without any sense of martial ethics.
"Alright!" Chen Jun finally spoke, his voice not loud, but carrying a calm strength. He grabbed Lao Wen, who was about to explode, and said, "Quiet down, everyone!"
He first looked at Lao Wen, his tone serious: "Lao Wen, control your emotions. Don't jump to conclusions before the matter is cleared up. What if... I mean, what if he really is that 'deceased' old director, and has some difficulties or mission we don't know about? If you keep cursing and even resorting to violence, how will you clean up the mess in the future? Aren't you just digging your own grave?"
Old Wen was taken aback by Chen Jun's words, as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over him, instantly calming his feverish mind. Yes, what if?
