Chapter 5: Promotion to Police Officer
Chapter 5: Promotion to Police Officer
In the deputy command room, the deputy commander, Dennis Murphy, was a fat man in his fifties who wore glasses and looked very refined.
"Ethan, describe what happened."
"Yes, sir, I only noticed it when Logan didn't reply..."
After Ethan finished speaking, Dennis nodded. He had already seen the surveillance footage and knew what had happened. He was clear about the role the young man in front of him played in the riot. He only asked the young man to give his account in order to determine what kind of person he was.
Dennis had a good impression of Ethan Lee in this matter, since the riot occurred in his area of responsibility. If it had escalated, he would have been held heavily responsible. It was the young man in front of him who suppressed the impact of the riot to a minimum, at least no police officers were killed.
"You did a great job; you were rational, decisive, courageous, and resourceful."
"It's not all my credit; it's all thanks to the cooperation of my colleagues and the effective command of my superiors."
Dennis raised his hand to interrupt.
"Alright, the credit is yours, don't be modest. But killing a prisoner with one blow will cause some trouble, do you understand? Why kill someone with one blow? You should have learned in school to restrain yourself from hitting someone on the head."
Lee Esen answered without changing his expression.
"I had studied it, but when the criminal attacked me with a knife, I didn't think too much; I was only thinking about subduing him."
"real?"
"real."
Dennis changed his questioning attitude and smiled.
"Remember your answer now. During this sensitive period, reporters may ask you questions. Don't worry, I've seen the surveillance footage. A single blow to the head is fine, even if it goes all the way to the Supreme Court. On the contrary, you've done a great service this time."
"Follow the instructions of your superiors."
Dennis took a piece of paper out of the drawer and handed it to him.
"Fill it out."
Li Yisen looked down, and even though he had been pretending not to fight or compete, he became a little excited because of the contents of the paper.
Application for early promotion.
This is no ordinary recommendation letter at the level of a police inspector. A recommendation letter needs to be initially reviewed by the personnel department, then approved by the chain of command, then an interview is arranged, and finally signed by the sheriff or his deputy.
An application for early promotion requires outstanding achievements such as contributions to major cases or acts of bravery.
Although Li Yisen can be transferred to patrol after passing the elite assessment, it would still take six months to a year to be promoted from trainee police officer to level 1. Now he can save that time.
"Thank you so much."
"Do you have any plans to stay and continue working as a prison guard?"
Li Yisen paused for a moment while filling out the form, hesitated for two seconds, and then decided to tell the truth.
"I want to go on patrol and become a detective."
Dennis nodded and began tapping his fingers on the table.
"Indeed, the promotion to detective is more suitable for you great lads."
(Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department detective is not a rank, but a position. Ranks are retained regardless of whether you are a constable, superintendent, or inspector.)
Dennis didn't continue the small talk; instead, he gave instructions on other matters.
"This is your first time killing someone. We will arrange for a psychologist to provide psychological treatment. Don't worry, it's just a routine procedure, so don't feel stressed. You also have five days of paid leave. We will arrange which police station you will be assigned to afterward."
"Thank you so much."
.
Fang Li Yisen came out of the office. He could tell that the police superintendent's attitude had changed, but he didn't care. He didn't want to stay in prison forever, and there probably wouldn't be much interaction between them in the future. What was more important now was to see what he had gained today.
[Ding! A high-risk prison riot has been quelled. The mastermind has been killed with a single blow. 3-star reward has been extracted from the prisoners.]
[Ding! Congratulations, host, you have obtained a three-star constitution-type talent: Powerful Heart]
[Physical Talent: Strong Heart (3 stars): Significantly increases the amount of blood pumped with each contraction and the amount pumped per minute, delivering more oxygen-rich blood during high-intensity exercise, delaying fatigue, and even with partial blood vessel blockage, forming rich collateral circulation, greatly reducing the risk of myocardial infarction. Less prone to hypoxia in high-pressure environments.]
[Disadvantages: A strong heart increases energy expenditure, requiring more nutritional intake to maintain balance.]
Endurance: 12+1
Li Yisen felt that his body temperature seemed to rise a little, and his steps were a little lighter.
"The heart?"
This talent allowed him to truly experience the benefits of having a cheat code. A strong heart is something that rich people dream of, and he never expected that the prisoner who was beaten to death would have such a heart.
Could someone have stolen that guy's heart from his body?
Li Yisen put aside matters that were none of his concern, but a system notification caught him off guard.
[Ding! Congratulations, host, you have obtained an M18 standard-issue pistol (extended magazine)]
[M18 Standard Issue Pistol: America's Military Pistol.]
【Diameter 9X19MM】
Magazine capacity: 21 round
Effective range: 50 meters
"An M18 pistol? What's with this?"
Don't be fooled by the fact that the M18 pistol is the handgun used by the American army. It's really not as good as the Glock. In addition, the early versions had a problem with the trigger and were prone to accidental discharge. Later, the trigger was changed to military standard, while the civilian version was voluntarily recalled.
The company that produces the M18 is utterly disgusting; it's obvious that Smith's officials pulled strings behind the scenes to win the bid.
Lee Ethan was more concerned about the "black" aspect of the original black-and-white system, which was the reward weapon for killing.
Getting weapons in America isn't difficult, so killing someone just to get a pistol is definitely not worth it. The only difference is that only weapons awarded by the system can be stored in the system inventory.
However, if the reward for 1 star is a pistol, what will the reward be for 2 stars or even 3 stars and above?
Li Yisen sees this ability as akin to drugs. He believes that if he were to kill someone in order to obtain weapons, he would become someone he wouldn't recognize in the future, just like someone addicted to drugs.
.
Inside a high-rise building in downtown Los Angeles, televisions broadcast footage of a Black protest, in which Black people not only vandalized vehicles and confronted police, but also looted shops and engaged in zero-dollar shopping sprees.
The protests were sparked by the killing of a Black man by police in California. Fueled by certain forces, clashes between Black civilians and state police occurred in Oakland and Los Angeles. Videos and online comments also surfaced alleging systemic discrimination against Black people by the current governor's administration.
The sound of the door opening interrupted the middle-aged white man's attention; the person who entered was his assistant.
"The operation at the men's central prison failed; the riot was suppressed before it even began."
The middle-aged man put down his wine glass, frowned slightly, and asked.
"How could it fail? We had everything planned out, whether it was the criminals or the police."
The assistant handed over the tablet computer so that the mastermind behind the prison riot could watch the video.
"What a brave policeman! Too bad he ruined my plans."
"The assistant asked."
"Should we make arrangements for a backup plan?"
"No need. Although it's a bit of a pity, the current situation is in my favor. As a hunter, it's best to strike with one blow. If you miss, you should hide and wait for an opportunity. Making a rash move will only expose yourself."
"Yes."
The middle-aged white man swirled the red wine in his glass. He knew very well that manipulating public opinion could easily backfire, so he had to be careful.
Three months ago, the governor led police system reforms, which included more changes to the prison system. That's why he wanted to use a large-scale prison riot to veto the governor's reforms and lower his support among taxpayers.
If the governor faces protests from Black people and expensive, laborious reforms that are worse than before, what will he have to win?
Even without the prison riots, his chances of winning would drop from 100% to 90% at most. As for the low-ranking police officers who were in his way, he didn't care about them at all; they were just insignificant figures.
Just as the assistant was about to leave, the middle-aged man suddenly added.
"Let's 'reward' outstanding police officers with their positions."
The assistant paused for a moment, then nodded in agreement.
"Yes, I will arrange it."
